Pilates Classes: What You Need To Get Started

Congratulations! You've signed up for your first Pilates class and are super excited to improve your core and overall strength, feel more mobile, and perhaps gain relief from your back or neck pain. As the class approaches, you may be wondering what you need to know and purchase before you begin. As a Pilates student for 20 years, with over 8 of those years as a teacher, I'm here to share my top tips and recommended products to help you kickstart your Pilates journey.

First, it's essential to ask your new Pilates teacher what they recommend you bring to class. Some studios provide mats and all accessories, while others don't provide anything. However, in most cases, you will need your Pilates mat, which is different from a yoga mat, and non-slip socks and a water bottle.

 

What do I wear to a Pilates Class?

In Pilates you will find yourself in various positions, so you want to be able to move freely, comfortably, and have the clothes reasonably fitted to your body so your teacher can watch and correct your movement patterns.

For women, leggings and a t-shirt or shirt with a band near the bottom seams to be the most popular outfit in my classes. Brands and budget do not matter, and you can find appropriate clothing anywhere, not just in ‘fitness’ shops.

For men, shorts with short leggings underneath and a t-shirt is the most common.

For everyone, Pilates non slip socks are a great addition to your outfit to keep your feet warm and to keeps the equipment more hygienic between classes.

Which Pilates Mat is Best for You?

Pilates mats can range from £15 to £70, but what sets them apart, and which one is best for you? The price difference is typically due to the quality of materials and construction. More expensive mats offer better support, prevent slipping, and don't stretch during challenging exercises. They may also be free from Phenol and Phthalate, which are potentially 'endocrine-disrupting chemicals' (*source below). If you plan to stick with Pilates long term, it's wise to invest in a quality mat that will last for years. Closed-cell mats are also antibacterial, requiring only occasional wiping to keep them hygienic and odor-free.

If you're new to Pilates, consider investing in one of the following mats:

  • Mad Fitness Pilates Mat (£35 on Amazon): This mat offers a denser foam for extra support, especially if you have back pain or find lying on a harder surface uncomfortable. It's less likely to move around during exercises like side planks, where stability is crucial. Amazon Link

Do I Need Pilates Socks?

Unlike yoga, where going barefoot helps prevent slipping in poses, Pilates rarely puts you in slippery situations. Since your feet may touch equipment and come close to others during certain exercises and stretches, Pilates socks are a smart addition. Some studios even require them. Remember to bring a non-spill water bottle, and you'll be all set for your Pilates class.

Pilates Class Etiquette

On the day of your class, it's advisable not to eat 1-2 hours before, as you might regret it otherwise. Enough said!

After years of teaching and nearly two decades of practicing Pilates, I've been in a variety of studios and am familiar with Pilates etiquette. Pilates classes are typically relaxing, clean, and friendly, and feeling comfortable from the moment you walk in is crucial for your practice.

If you're unsure about what to do or where to go, here are a few tips to put your mind at ease:

  • Leave your shoes and belongings where other clients do or ask your instructor for guidance.

  • Do not bring your phone into the studio, or if there is no safe place to leave it ensure it is on silent. If you must have a phone on for an emergency, let the teacher know to confirm this is ok.

  • Have any necessary forms ready for your instructor, especially if you have injuries, surgeries, or health issues. Trained Pilates teachers can offer alternatives tailored to your conditions.

  • Ask the instructor if they prefer you to take a particular spot in the studio or if you can choose your own. Some teachers like new clients nearby for easy corrections.

  • If you can choose your spot, keep in mind that some people prefer consistency, so it's a good idea to ask someone nearby if you're unsure. It's also a great way to make a new friend in your class.

Enjoying regular Pilates is often recommended for pain relief, especially in the lower back, and for overall strengthening and joint mobility. Practicing at least once a week in a Pilates class with a committed instructor who provides individual corrections is ideal.

While there's plenty of Pilates instructors out there, having a Level 3-4 Certified instructor to guide you clearly through foundations onwards, will ensure the smallest of changes to your positions are correct and will make a significant difference in your progress, transformation and enjoyment.
